Privacy

Santa takes privacy and security very seriously. Here is Santa’s privacy policy and security info including details about cookies and how Santa manages your data

Tracking

Santa is not tracking you. This website exists so you can track Santa.

Nevertheless, when you interact with the website (login, post a comment), some information about your connection will be recorded to enable forensics to determine the source of an interaction should that ever be necessary.

Cookies

There are three types of cookie:

  1. Baked cookies - Santa loves these, but they are not involved.
  2. Persistent browser cookies - Santa does not use these.
  3. Session cookies - needed for you to be logged-in.

Notes:

  1. Session cookies are only used if you log-in. Otherwise, on pages where sessions are started, visitors don’t even get their own cookie, they share a guest cookie. Session cookies you actually use (by logging in) can be manually deleted via the “Manage sessions” section of the user account interface, but they are automatically deleted by logging out. Abandoned session cookies are automatically deleted after 90 days.
  2. Persistent cookies can be blocked and the site will continue to function:
    • The website uses Google Analytics which deploys cookies but Google provides a browser add-on you can use to opt out if that’s important to you. The add-on is available for available for Microsoft Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari and Opera from https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout
    • Some of the advertising may involve cookies. Santa has no control over this.

Your e-mail address

Maintaining an account on SantaCon.info requires a valid e-mail address as does communicating with Santa via e-mail (obviously).

  1. Santa won’t abuse your trust. Your e-mail address will not be shared without your express permission unless Santa makes an honest mistake (track record is solid though: 12 years in and no such mistakes yet).
  2. The account/login system uses only hashes of e-mail addresses - the addresses themselves are not stored on the SantaCon.info servers as part of this system. This means that anyone who is able to gain access to the servers will not obtain your e-mail address, with the following provisions:
    • Any e-mail address recently provided should be considered “in transit” and may exist in plain text in one or more temporary files. This applies when you first create an account or use the log in via e-mail option. It does not apply when logging in directly (with a password) or via social media because these methods do not use temporary files.
    • Anyone who already knows your e-mail address may be able to generate the hash and verify it.
